How to fix an HP ScanJet 4100c scanner, if it's completely dead.

I got one that died. I found out why it died.

On the main board is a component labelled E18

It is not like any component I have seen before - perhaps its an inductor or surge arrestor or something. Either way if you look at it so it is horizontal, the top two pins should be shorted, and the bottom two pins should be shorted.

In this one, the top right pin was the same as the bottom left pin, and bottom right was open.

Test it to see :) Since it's not essential, it can just be removed and jumpered.

Then hopefully you can scan away.

I can't fix any other problems with this scanner yet.
